What is Working Day 1?

Working day 1 financial reporting is a practice introduced by Simon Worthington almost 20 years ago in a small primary care trust in the NHS, where budget reports are issued on the first day of the financial period. Mr Worthington and his team introduced this practice in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and its adoption by other NHS trusts has been gradual. However, its advantages include faster reporting, putting the organisation on the front foot, creating a rhythm about the financial management cycle. In addition, working day 1 reporting allows finance teams to work earlier with operational teams to influence service and financial performance. While some concerns have been raised about accuracy, the practice has been implemented successfully, and trust in the finance teams’ judgment has been empowering.
