Helping new starters to integrate under hybrid working

Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Midlands, Acute

The problem

The financial management team at KGH needs to help new starters to integrate into the team under a hybrid working model because otherwise there can be a delay in learning how to do what is required in their role, and also problems with retention if colleagues do not feel fully part of the team.

The challenge

  • How might we help new starters to get to know their colleagues and integrate with the team more effectively under hybrid working, so that they feel welcomed and part of the team.
  • How might we ensure that everything required for new starters to do their job is in place from day one every time we have a new starter, so that there are no delays in receiving training and/or being able to do any aspect of their role.

The outputs

  • Recent new starters have commented on how receiving the new starters pack has helped them to feel welcome as they can see that an effort has been made to help them settle in, and they feel better co-ordinated with the information that has been provided to them.
  • Forward planning has enabled new starters to get up to speed with performing their new roles more quickly, therefore improving efficiency.
  • Line managers are better organised when they have a new starter in their team as they have a clear checklist to work through to ensure that everything is in place.

The outcomes

The benefits experienced as a result of the innovation are:

  • New starters commencing with the team get to know their colleagues more rapidly and feel better co-ordinated due to the information that they have been provided with in the new starter pack.
  • New team members should be able to get up to speed with performing their role more quickly which will improve productivity.
  • Line managers are better co-ordinated when organising everything a new starter needs as they have a checklist to work through rather than doing things on an ad hoc basis.
  • We hope that by helping team members to feel more like part of the team this will improve retention of staff going forwards.
