Improving Value and Engagement in the NHS Benchmarking Network

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, Acute

The problem

NHS Benchmarking Network (NHSBN) survey submissions need to be uploaded fully and accurately because otherwise the subscription to the Benchmarking network is a waste of the Trust’s financial resources and less likely to be fully utilised by staff accessing the network for information.

The challenges

How might we provide full qualitative submissions for all areas so that our data quality improves the output on the NHSBN website. Doing this will help identify clinical variations and potential efficiencies and waste.

What were/are the outputs?

• Better knowledge of where to gather information.
• Quality of survey results.
• Productive use of the NHSBN.
• A more accurate and complete NHSBN survey submission.

What were/are the outcomes?

• The benefit to the organisation is staff are more likely to use the information provided by the NHSBN, in the knowledge it is more accurate and complete.
• Staff participate in the feedback sessions with regards to all the different NHSBN projects that have been happening and actively participate in its use.
• The survey completion for 2023 was 89% which is a much-improved completion rate compared to previous year of 55% (2022).
• We now have a streamlined process with lots of backup documentation to reference for use in future submissions to ensure we are consistent with our information.
• A richer pool of benchmarking information to use to support improving value.
