Using coaching and mentoring skills in the workplace

Learn coaching and mentoring skills which can be used in the workplace and integrated into your existing professional development.

This one-day session is designed to help NHS finance professionals develop their coaching and mentoring skills for use in the workplace. It will offer practical insights and takeaways on the use of coaching and mentoring approaches to support staff development, career progression, and more effective team conversations.

This event is open to all finance staff but will be particularly relevant to line managers and those with management responsibilities.

Please note we are aiming to maximise attendance at this, so feel free to book multiple colleagues from the same organisation.

The session will help participants to:

  • Understand the key differences between coaching and mentoring, and when to apply each approach
  • Reflect on their existing use of coaching and mentoring in their roles
  • Explore tools such as the ‘Triangle of How’ to guide effective conversations
  • Develop core skills for impactful coaching and mentoring dialogues
  • Consider the value of reverse mentoring in the workplace

While mentoring is typically used outside the line management relationship, the session will also examine how mentoring-style tools and conversations can be used within a management context—particularly when supporting career development rather than focusing solely on performance.

Whether you’re completely new to coaching and mentoring, or looking for a timely refresher amongst the annual appraisal and talent conversation calendar, this session will expand your knowledge and skills to meet those needs.

The full day session is running online on MS Teams and will include a 45-minute lunch break and other comfort breaks.
