The Return to Work Programme is designed to support NHS Finance staff who have returned from parental leave within the last six to twelve months. This initiative focuses on building a robust support network for participants while offering concise, monthly development events that seamlessly fit into their busy schedules.
Applications for the 2026 cohort are now open.
A survey conducted revealed that more could be done to facilitate a successful transition back to work after a prolonged leave of six months or more. In response, London piloted the Return to Work Programme in 2023 with the goal of addressing these challenges. Following its successful launch, we are delighted to confirm its extension into 2026—marking its forth consecutive year of empowering returning colleagues.
The programme is designed to deliver personalised support and skill development, empowering individuals for a seamless and confident return to the workforce.

Why Join?
Hear directly from past participants about their experiences:
“I would definitely recommend the programme to a colleague. The programme helped with rebuilding my confidence upon returning to work, firstly by highlighting that I was not alone in the challenges I faced. Secondly, it provided acknowledgment of the major transition we were all going through, and the sessions offered valuable firsthand experiences, tips, and knowledge for navigating this transition.”
“I gained a different perspective to how I viewed/approached things, including some practical advice that I have incorporated into my life. It has been great to hear from senior leaders who didn’t let maternity dim their professional ambitions, particularly as I start in a new role/organisation right after maternity leave.”
“A big thank you, I already feel supported in my return, knowing I have a little network of people going through the same thing.”
“The programme was very well organised and perfectly timed (between sessions and length of sessions). I really appreciated the diversity of the speakers and their honest stories of returning to work. The advice on navigating the challenges of balancing work and life was invaluable and made me confident in setting boundaries to protect my time with my daughter. I also came to view my new role as a mother not as career-limiting, but as an opportunity to develop skills in problem-solving and resilience. The programme gave me the confidence to apply for a new job, and honestly, I don’t think I would have dreamt of securing this role straight after returning from mat leave!”
