đ The Power of Allyship: Building an Inclusive NHS Together
In June 2025, the One NHS Finance Rainbow Network hosted a powerful session on the Importance of Allyship, shedding light on the vital role allies play in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community within the NHS and beyond. This presentation wasnât just informativeâit was a call to action.
Understanding the LGBTQIA+ Spectrum
The session began by grounding attendees in key terms and identities that make up the LGBTQIA+ acronym. From lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, to the inclusive â+ââeach identity was explained with clarity and respect. The presentation also highlighted the diversity of Pride flags and the variety of the community.
 Gender Identity, Pronouns, and Respect
A crucial part of the discussion focused on gender identity, expression, and pronouns. Attendees were encouraged to:
- Use chosen pronouns respectfully.
- Include pronouns in email signatures and virtual backgrounds.
- Ask questions when unsureârespectfully and with openness.
This section emphasized that gender is not the same as sex, and that identity exists on a spectrum, not a binary.
What Is Allyship?
Allyship is more than supportâit’s action. Allies are individuals who, regardless of their own identity, stand up for the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ people. They:
- Listen and educate
- Acknowledge privilege and challenge assumptions.
- Speak up against discrimination and advocate for inclusive policies.
As Gavin noted, âWhile minority groups often initiate change, allies help make that change widespread and lasting.â
Why Allyship Matters
The presentation painted a sobering picture of the global and local landscape:
- 64 countries still criminalize homosexuality.
- The UKâs ranking for LGBTQ+ rights dropped from 1st in 2015 to 22nd in 2025.
- Conversion therapy remains legal in many places.
- LGBTQ+ individuals face significant barriers in healthcare, employment, and public life.
In the NHS, allyship is essential to closing the LGBTQ+ staff experience gap and ensuring equitable patient care. From long waits at gender identity clinics to negative experiences in mental health services, the data shows that there is still much work to be done.
The Role of the National Rainbow Network
The National Rainbow Network is leading the charge to create a more inclusive NHS Finance community. Their goals include:
- Raising awareness through education and storytelling.
- Supporting colleagues to come out and feel safe.
- Creating safe spaces for open dialogue.
- Learning from other networks and sharing best practices.
Final Thoughts
Allyship is not a one-time actâitâs a lifelong commitment to learning, supporting, and standing up for whatâs right. Whether you’re part of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, your voice matters. Together, we can build a more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable NHS.
